Interpretation

There is an entire academic discipline devoted to interpretation, known as Hermeneutics. It is fascinating, and fundamental to human existence, but I can’t hope to even scratch the surface of its complexities here. Suffice to say, the readerly world is an approximation to the original world that the author wished to communicate. A representation. It can never be the same and nobody can ever know how close the interpreted readerly world-in-mind is to the original writerly vision, because the readerly world-in-mind is different every time — unique to every single interpretation — and the author is not there to tell us his ‘truth’. And you will remember that, even if the author was there to recall his ‘truth’, the author’s recollected truth would not be the truth. Memory is bent by time and experience, and is only memory — a representation of remembered ‘truth’.
